Background

The owner of a local Pilates studio approached me with a vision to start a nonprofit organization aimed at training professional dancers in New York City to become Pilates teachers. The idea emerged in response to the financial hardships dancers faced during the COVID-19 pandemic, compounded by the general financial challenges young dancers endure. Given their training, dancers can easily acquire the skills necessary to succeed as Pilates instructors.

Objectives

  1. Organize and Clarify Vision: Transform a disorganized collection of materials into a coherent and compelling presentation.

  2. Establish Clear Branding and Messaging: Define the nonprofit's brand and key messages.

  3. Develop a Professional Website: Create a Figma design for the nonprofit's website and ensure it is effectively developed.

  4. Secure Funding: Position the nonprofit to successfully complete its initial funding round.

  5. Prepare for Launch: Ready the nonprofit to accept its first class of dancers by Q4 of this year.

Challenges

The project was initially stalled due to an overwhelming jumble of photos, content, wireframes, and miscellaneous advice. The materials lacked organization and clear direction, hindering progress and clarity.

Solution

1. Organizing Materials into a Slideshow

I began by familiarizing myself with all the provided materials. The goal was to distill this information into a concise, engaging, and informative slideshow.

Actions Taken:

  • Content Review: Thoroughly reviewed photos, content, wireframes, and advice notes.

  • Information Synthesis: Condensed the scattered information into key points and coherent messaging.

  • Slide Creation: Designed a slideshow that highlighted the nonprofit’s mission, vision, objectives, and the unique opportunity for dancers to transition into Pilates instruction.

2. Establishing Branding and Messaging

With the slideshow as a foundation, I worked with the owner to refine the nonprofit’s branding and messaging.

Actions Taken:

  • Brand Definition: Collaborated to define the nonprofit's brand identity, including its name, logo, color scheme, and overall aesthetic.

  • Messaging: Developed clear and compelling messaging that resonated with potential donors and partners.

3. Designing the Website in Figma

Next, I translated the agreed-upon branding and messaging into a detailed Figma design for the nonprofit’s website.

Actions Taken:

  • Website Architecture: Created a site map to outline the website structure.

  • Figma Design: Designed the website in Figma, ensuring it was visually appealing, user-friendly, and aligned with the nonprofit’s brand.

  • Collaboration: Worked closely with the owner to incorporate feedback and finalize the design.

4. Developing the Website

Once the design was finalized, I coordinated with a developer to bring the website to life.

Actions Taken:

  • Developer Handoff: Provided the developer with the complete Figma design and all necessary assets.

  • Project Management: Oversaw the development process to ensure the website was built according to specifications and within the timeline.

Results

The nonprofit is now well-positioned for success:

  • Funding Progress: The organization is halfway through its initial round of funding.

  • Website Launch: The website has been developed and is operational, serving as a key tool for communication and fundraising.

  • First Class Prepared: The nonprofit is on track to accept its first class of dancers in the fourth quarter of this year.

Conclusion

This case study demonstrates the transformative power of organization, clear messaging, and effective design in launching a nonprofit. By converting a disorganized collection of materials into a cohesive strategy, establishing strong branding, and developing a professional website, we successfully positioned the nonprofit to achieve its funding goals and begin its mission of helping dancers transition to rewarding careers as Pilates instructors.
